Shine a Light

Shine a Light follows on from A Drop in the Ocean where not all the bottle tops collected during the project’s lifespan were used on the fence. As it was a statement about our throw-away culture, A Drop in the Ocean wouldn’t be complete unless everything that was collected could be put to good use.

Over 3 weeks in November 2019 people came together to create a chandelier using 4,650 plastic bottle tops in total. It hanged in the middle of the library until the end of January 2020.

The chandelier hanged for 2.5 months, and throughout this time – the darkest days of the year- it did ‘shine some light’ on current environmental and wider societal issues. People were invited to a series of ‘Conversations under the Chandelier’ to reflect on the urgent issues of our time and how we can respond to these in our local communities. Also, information panels about the project, plastic pollution and prompts to trigger their imaginations and a panel where they could leave their “What if” messages.
